RP Fighting Blindness to produce Patient Information DVD

Thanks to a generous grant, and the support of a team at Channel 4, we are at last pressing ahead with the production of our Patient Information DVD about RP. This will be primarily designed to provide good quality information, and re-assurance, to people who have just been diagnosed as having RP, or their families. However it will also include information about the charity and about the research that we are sponsoring, and encourage people to join us for support.

The production team would like to interview people with RP, and perhaps their family members, to try and identify three case studies that could be used in the film. If you would like to be involved, and would be happy to talk to our producers about your RP and how you have coped with it, please get in touch. We would like to send a list of people to them this week, so if you could respond quickly this would be very helpful.

At this point, all that would be involved would be agreeing to meet the production team (away from the cameras!) so that they can chat to you. From that they’ll shortlist the people they think can contribute to the film and then get in touch to talk about the next steps.

Unfortunately we can’t offer a lucrative Hollywood acting contract but we will of course cover any expenses you incur. It’s really, really important that we get real people with RP involved rather than use actors, so please, if you can help, get in touch as soon as possible with David by emailing david@brps.org.uk.

If you put yourself or your family forward it's very important that we can contact you easily, so in your email please can you let us have the following:

  • Your name
  • Daytime landline and mobile phone numbers
  • Email address that you check each day
  • Town and postcode
  • Sex
  • Date of birth
  • Type of RP you have (if you know it)
  • Amount of vision you have at present
  • A brief note about family members that have RP

Case study wanted for PRIMA Magazine

The womens' magazine PRIMA want to feature the story of a woman with RP, and discuss how she has coped with the disability, relationships, and family decisions. Would you or a member of your family be willing to be featured?

We need a woman aged between 30 and 60 with a story to tell. Perhaps you have faced a particularly tough time with your RP, or made a particular success of something despite (or because of!) your RP. Is your family situation different because of RP, or have you faced difficult decisions?

If you are prepared to talk to the magazine please let us know. This is a great opportunity, as awareness of RP benefits all of us, and also helps with our fundraising.

We would provide someone to talk to the feature writer about the science, the ongoing research, and other background information, you would only need to talk about your personal story. So again, if you can help, please drop a line to david@brps.org.uk with a note of your name, contact details, town, and a sentence or two about why you think you could be featured.

This is a valuable opportunity for us all, so please put your name forward if you have "a story to tell".

Channel 4 "Cutting Edge" Series: A Year in The Life of...

October Films, who make the C4 documentary “Cutting Edge” series, want to film a documentary about someone coping with sight loss over a period of a year or so. Again, they have asked us to help provide a case study.

October Film's producer, Clare Cameron, writes:

"I work for an independent television production company called October Films. We are developing a documentary about the loss of eyesight for the Cutting Edge documentary strand on Channel 4. The aim of the film would be to follow a year in the life of a young person losing their sight. I am ideally looking for someone in their teens or early 20s, who we could film with over a fairly long period of time.
At this early stage, it would be an enormous help if you could help me find potential contributors for the programme. Perhaps you could send this to your members or post it on your website?
We are making the documentary about people who lose their sight in their younger years, we want to hear from anyone (aged 10 – 30) who is beginning to lose their sight for any reason at all. Please get in touch if you want to share your experiences.
October Films are a leading British independent film and television production company, producing content for broadcasters worldwide. We have a well-established reputation for intelligent factual programming. In 2008 we were once again voted one of the Top Ten Independent Producers in the annual Broadcast Magazine Peer Poll - for the 12th consecutive year - and our productions have received over 90 international awards.
For more information please visit our website October Films and, if you would like to see any examples of our work, please do not hesitate to ask.

All three of these projects are really exciting for us, as we work to raise the profile of this organisation and awareness of RP. Please give them serious thought and we look forward to hearing from you.
